Day of Green

Happy late St. Patrick’s day! I admit,  I think I subconsciously wore green for the holiday. Until a few hours into my day, I didn’t actually realize I had put on this green pleated skirt to honor St. Patty’s. And the wind made for an interesting photo-taking experience.

I found this vintage mint green skirt at a thrift store for 99 cents! It has most definitely been one of my best (and most versatile) thrift store finds. The leather jacket is from Victoria’s Secret online and the shoes are about 7 years old so I don’t remember where I found them.

Pencil with an Edge

Just a quick blogfit post today.  I had been looking around for a faux leather pencil skirt as a more contemporary basic (it’s an edgier black pencil skirt!) and I finally found one I liked enough from ASOS that more or less just what I had in mind.  I also found the basic black turtleneck from ASOS, a wardrobe staple that needed replacing in my closet.

Printed: Blue & White

Blue and white prints and designs have always been very striking to me.  There are such interesting backgrounds associated with blue and white motifs among various cultures. Chinoiserie and Delftware derived from the Netherlands, for example.  My mom has always had a wonderful collection of Delftware, (a lot of which came from Colonial Williamsburg) so that is very likely one reason I am drawn to blue and white prints…it’s apparently ingrained.

So, I made this dress over the summer with the intention of wearing it to a wedding but opted for a different one.  I wanted to wait until the winter to do a blog post with this dress because I thought the blue and white print would probably stand out way better with a snowy white background.

This nice, mild December day provided the motivation to get out and take advantage because who knows how much longer we’ll be spoiled with this unseasonable season.  I must admit, it’s felt a little strange to omit the coat these past several days, but it has been pretty great.

The light was so interesting and beautiful today.  There were these orange-y warm tones coming from one end of the sky and dark, somber clouds on the other.  The combination made for some awesome photo opps.

Toeing the Towpath

Ohio’s nature offers some really great backdrops for blog photos, especially since we have a National Park fairly close to Cleveland.  The other day we took a stroll down the Towpath at Boston Mills in Cuyahoga Valley National Park (#CVNP).  The Towpath follows the path of the Erie Canal and follows along the Cuyahoga River.  Today, there are 35 numbered locks from Akron to Cleveland, although there were many more functional locks in the 1800’s.  If you’re intrigued, there is much more information available online about the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath.

If you’re ever touring CVNP, stop by Boston Mills along the Towpath, there is a Visitor Center and the Boston Store where you can take a pit stop for a snack or two. :d

Favored Layers

Thinking back to this time last year, we had already gotten a very snowy experience.  So, it’s pretty typically Cleveland that this year it’s been pretty warm throughout November.  I realize I mention weather a lot on my blog…but really, the weather determines what I wear every day.  That is often how I decide what to put on on a daily basis.  I’m a natural freeze baby, so warmth and comfort level are on the top of my list when I’m deciding what’s appropriate to pull out of my closet every day.  And with Cleveland’s wish-washy climate, dressing for the weather can often be a bit of a challenge.  That’s when I really start to depend on my jackets and blazers as additive layers, they help turn up the notch on an otherwise un-involved ensemble, but also serve their utilitarian purpose.

I had gotten this blazer from H&M a few years ago and it was totally basic.  I also had a dress in the same color that had this awesome shoulder detail but I always thought that the shoulders were a bit too heavy for the knit dress…so I deconstructed the dress, took off these awesome beaded epaulletes and reapplied them to each shoulder of the simple jacket.  The blazer definitely makes a much more appropriate home for the appliques.

Seeing Leopard Spots

Just a blogfit for this Sunday’s post! A faux leopard fur jacket had been on my list of “vintage items to find” for quite a while, and I actually found this one months ago at a little shop and only just decided to finally buy the thing.  I kept thinking about it (which always means…”BUY it”) and luckily it was still around when I went back looking for it.

Brisk November

Admittedly, this was a bit of an impromptu photo session for this blog post.  I thought,  ” I love this jacket…let’s do a blog post.”  This plaid blazer was a sewing project of my mom’s from the 70’s.  Pretty awesome, right?  I actually just pulled it out a few days ago, because I had completely forgotten about it.  I’m thankful that my mom was apparently the same size as me when she made (or bought) some of these great pieces I’ve confiscated from her archived wardrobe.

And while I love this jacket, the weather was actually just a little too brisk to wear this plaid number and be warm enough-even with a fisherman sweater underneath-for our downtown Cleveland adventures yesterday evening.  Even still, for being 40 some years old, these wool threads sure have held up well and hopefully will continue to for years to come.

The bright orange lining makes it even better, in my book.

It’s a sad fact that these trees behind me were beautifully colored only a couple weeks ago, and now they’re so bare and prepared for the inevitable winter ahead.

Fall Transition

I will admit, I love that Ohio experiences late summers basically every year.  What I don’t like though, is dressing for them.  Honestly, it’s a little challenging.  What do you wear when it’s around 55 degrees in the morning and at night, but about 85 in the middle of the day? It’s what I like to refer to as the ‘transition period’.  We’re on the verge of cold, but that summer heat is still hangin’ on.

Usually to counter this ‘transition period’, I’ll opt for pants and a tank, or shorts and a long tee and will always make sure I have a jacket or blazer to throw on just in case the chill lingers around.  Dresses too, are always an appropriate option.

As Seasons Change

Welcome to my first official “Fall” post!  I can’t believe it’s already September and as of yesterday, is starting to feel like it too, with that cool Autumn air creeping its way in.

Sometimes during a different season, I like to head back to places where I’ve taken previous blog photos.  It’s fun to see the differences of a place from one season to the next.  This time, we headed back to Whipps Ledges, an area within the Cleveland Metroparks that we visited last December when all the leaves were gone and everything was covered in snow.  It is a beautiful area that’s the location of many a wedding photo and the like.

Not having been back to Whipps Ledges since last December, it was like walking into a whole new place.  In the winter, everything is so bare and wide open, the area looks huge! Not to mention very, very bright.  Now, in September, the lighting is completely different from all of the leaves and foliage, the perception of space, and of course the overall appearance.  I’m already making a note to myself to come back later in the Fall to see all the warm colors.

These earrings are a favorite pair of mine.  The color is great and they look like they’d be super heavy on your ears but they’re surprisingly light weight.
